Lifestyle Tips

When facing a time of transition, the temptation to worry, snack, and either under or over sleep are habits that can be put aside by healthier options.  Here are a few of my favorites to encourage habits to smile about...

1. Keep your calendar readable; if too many options crowd any one day there is a need to become more decisive. To try to "do it all" is not the same thing as "choosing to do a thing well." Begin now to prioritize quality outcomes and not just quantity opportunities.

2. Breathe!  Not many of us know how to do this well and are guilty of barely breathing through much of life. This one energizing activity will add much to clear headed thinking and improved health.  Simply breathe in slowly and deeply for a count of 4, hold it, then exhale slowly for a count of 8 for 3-5 repetitions. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.  Make this a daily exercise!

3. Create a favorites list of simple, non-food pleasures. Things you truly love to do make this list! Keep it with you or post it where you can see it often; when you begin craving sugar or caffeine when you aren't truly hungry, perhaps nourishment from your soul is in order. Take a walk, give a hug, call a friend, etc.

4. Drink water. Many people are chronically dehydrated; stress certainly contributes to this condition by focusing attention away from the signals the body gives for this simple, energizing solution. When feeling hungry between meals, first drink a glass of water; cravings for caffeine, sugar, or salt are often a body’s cry for more water.

5. Take a walk. Let your body move to its own rhythm or need.

6. Create a quiet space; not necessarily a place as much as 10 – 15 minutes of time to simply be quiet, without the interruption of anything electronic or human. Listening to your own heart and soul requires this unique discipline of healing stillness.

7. Add fresh-cut flowers, or a blooming live plant to a room you spend significant time in, whether at work or at home.

8. Sleep, rest and relax. Give yourself permission to turn your day “off” 30 minutes earlier to be able to enter into a restful sleep more easily. Darken your room or wear an eye mask to sleep deeper, longer.

9. Smile and laugh!  Think about the people you love, and then enjoy creating a moment of fun to share with them.  Everyone benefits greatly!

10. Give and receive hugs!
