What to do with all that CANDY?!

Halloween is fast approaching, and you’ve probably already got your stash of candy ready to hand out to trick or treaters. And if you have kids, even more candy is brought home when they return from trick or treating. So, what do you do when you find yourself with too much candy? Sugar creates numerous problems for everyone from becoming more prone to illness, to the woes of kids with energy spikes and lows affecting behavior and mood. While raising 4 children myself, I’ve come up with a few handy tips to minimize those sugar woes that happen after Halloween...
  • Donate half (or more) of your candy stash to a local Food Bank or to soldiers. Or, take it to work and place in the cafeteria with a sign that says “free” - in other words, get as much candy out of the house as soon as possible!
  • Create smaller portion candy treat bags. Divide your stash and place a few pieces in plastic baggies and place in the panty. Make it a rule that the baggies are special treats only to be used at certain times, such as only on the weekends or as a reward for good behavior, etc.
  • Freeze any remaining candy. It’s less tempting when it’s frozen. Out of sight, out of mind!
  • Detox by incorporating fresh, whole foods into meals. Think dark leafy greens, brown rice and colorful vegetables. And for dessert, serve fruit. These foods help to satisfy appetites and slow sugar spikes from sweets.
  • Increase the W’s: drink more Water and increase movement by taking a daily Walk. Those two small additions to your family’s lifestyle will make a big difference to help combat candy overload!
Try minimizing your candy abundance this year and notice the benefits for your family’s health and happiness!
